How Zodiac Sign Dates Are Determined
Your zodiac sign — also called your star sign or sun sign — is defined by where the Sun sat along the ecliptic on the day you were born. The zodiac divides that path into 12 equal segments of 30°, each named for a constellation. As the Sun moves through one segment roughly every month, everyone born in that window shares the same sun sign.
Because the Sun crosses from one sign to the next at a specific moment (not neatly at midnight), the boundary dates shift slightly year to year. If your birthday falls on a boundary — say April 19 or 20 — your exact birth time and year determine whether you're an Aries or a Taurus.
Born on a Cusp? Here's What It Means
People born within a couple of days of a sign change often describe themselves as "cusp" babies — an Aries-Taurus cusp, for example.
